Review: Ramit Sethi’s “Call to Action” Copywriting Course

To be honest I don’t remember when and how I stumbled across Ramit Sethi from iwillteachyoutoberich.com but I do know that I always open his emails. They are usually long .. and informative .. and entertaining. I always end up reading right to the end.

I usually (I’m sure you do too) scan the headlines in my inbox and delete most emails, even if the topic interests me. There are simply too many emails and too little time to read them all. So if there are emails and blog posts that you’d call “unputdownable” were they a book they stand out.

Why Was I Even Looking for a Copywriting Course?

In case it’s the first time you stumble across this website let me quickly fill you in where I’m coming from. In 2004 I ditched my corporate IT job in London, UK, in order to move to the south of Spain and set up my own sewing business where I create made to measure flamenco dance costumes.

I started with nothing more than enthusiasm and a love for sewing. “Let’s just give this a go until I hit a show stopper” was my business plan. I didn’t really know anything about flamenco dance costumes either – I’d just find what I needed to know online I thought.

I quickly realized that there wasn’t any information online, or anywhere else for that matter, about how to sew a flamenco dance costume, not in Spanish and even less in English. Once I figured things out I decided to share what I’ve learnt and created www.flamencodressmaking.com.

But my focus was on creating costumes and I only occasionally posted a new tutorial or article. I set up a mailing list but just let it grow by itself, which means slowly. I wanted a part of my business to be online, I didn’t want to be tied to the sewing machines to earn money but I didn’t believe there were enough people interested in such a specialized topic to justify putting lots of energy into the site. Then I hit 800 subscribers.

I knew that if I wanted to start connecting with my subscribers I needed to learn how to reach them.

Why Did I Choose “Call to Action”

Who best to learn copywriting from than the guy whose emails and blog posts I always read, who writes in a way that makes me feel I know him personally and who has clearly demonstrated that he knows how to run a successful online business.

The course isn’t cheap (it’s pretty much what the average Spanish employee earns in a month) but I kept reading the course details in order to figure out whether I’d be able to make more money than I’d spend with what I’d learn. The answer for me was a clear yes so I signed up in November 2015.

The Results

I felt confident to pre-sell my first online course because I knew how to write my optin page, the follow up emails and the sales page.

I definitely wasn’t used to seeing a 30% optin rate (I knew 2-3% optin rates on my website) and that first campaign made almost twice what I’d paid for the course.

Lots more people are now responding to my emails and these connections are invaluable for figuring out how to best serve my clients (or help out some friends with their kickstarter campaign:)

What I Most Loved About the Course

I couldn’t come up with just one answer.

I loved that it’s more about how to connect with people than just writing.

I love the confidence that comes from knowing exactly what to do and how.

Then there is the Vault – I loved the case studies and real life examples  – watching real, average copy transform into something that makes people feel heard and understood really drives the lessons home.
